Why reach for the stars when there are plenty of serviceable cigarette ends in the gutter?

What a powerful sentence, Wasp! It reminds me of this sentence from Yoshikawa Eiji, pasted here from an English translation:

“You’ll find, my friend, that in the gutters of this floating world, much of the trash consists of fallen flowers.”

I don't know if I am more impressed by the image of thousands of lives, like lit cigarettes, shining like so many small red stars flowing across the arteries of the city, or by that of ideal, unreacheable, shining heavenly bodies, whose cold brightness we are condemed to contemplate from the depths of our soiled lives.
