I can't really speak to this school in particular, but roleplay in general is a well respected teaching method. . . although probably not the roleplay you're used to. In education it's not a game, it's a group learning technique. Here are some links that explain a bit more about how to utilize it in lesson plans, if you're interested.

Roleplay as a teaching strategy works best for the types of learners that are group-think or cooperative learners, so it's not a valid strategy for everyone. For example, I am a visual and tactile learner, and my LEAST FAVORITE method of learning is role play. When the instructor would say, okay, everyone let's pretend. . . I checked out mentally.

Yeah Ghost, I remember some "roleplaying" when I studiet for socialworker, but that was more like group interaktions or 1 on 1. Eks. a specifik type of conversation is played out, and trying to give the participants some experience with thouse types of conversations, but it never really worked that well. 1. it was borring, simple as that. 2. it came nowhere close to reality. 3. the "acters" had a hard time taking it seriously.

The way this school is using roleplay is on a different lvl. They have different themes, eks. ancient Rome, WW2, Sci-Fi and so on. These themes stretch over several weeks, and sometimes mounths. And every course is part of the main theme.
When I was there they had this huge WW2 theme. The student where british solders preparing for a mission behinde enemy lines. In math they where calculating where they had to jump out of the plains, in physics/chemistry, they where making "bombs" and figuring out how much pressure a railroad rail (the metal beam part) could handle before it broke, and so on. So every course was a part of this stoy. The teachers and students where wearing costumes, and the school and the different classrooms where decoratet to look like wasrooms, and briefing rooms. Was really awesome!!

Since then, another school using some simular technics startet up aswell.

It was great to see Rping used for more then just entertainment (not that there is anything wrong with that!), but there is just more potential, how do we interact with eachother, can we explore some of the mental mechanics in human behavier and so on.

I was not expecting a D&D for kids kind of Roleplay and given Era's enthusiasm I was doubting the "Let's pretend" method.

And I was not disapointed !

I have got some innate curiosity that I have to satisfy but also the topic seemed useful in a way one could learn some techniques.
Add to it the fact I had to listen for long years about "teaching" methods and of course "mistakes in teaching" done by some teachers as my mom is (nowadays) the Headmistress of a School (that's what a school "director" is called, right?).
Hearing everyday how she is planning to get things into those little bastard's heads - oh, yes, she specialised in pre-school for years, until she got a more broad spectrum both pre-school and primary at this time - and what is wrong with other practised approaches was from a perspective quite educational in a way I learned how to better control my messages.

But that's not the kind of geeky you want to hear about here.

Brings up the great memories of good times spent in Horsens (< That's a city in Denmark, not some kind of poney) at the VIA University College.

Teaching pre-schoolers anything sounds like a challange. I wound't know how and where to start.
I used to study, work and live in Århus, not that far from Horsens, well nothing is really that far from anything in Denmark since it's a pretty small place. I remember an awesome Metallica concert in the old prison in Horsens, it's a great place for a concert!!

How about Steampunk? I've just recently been to a steampunk convention and I really enjoyed the "maker" vibe that they were promoting. I made my own steampunk goggles and turned a parasol into a steampunk attack umbrella. The cosplay was fun, as well--I went as an airship captain.

Anyone else ever read the Soulless series by Gail Carriger? Excellent steampunk/gothic horror crossover series.

That is so awesome! I love your outfit, I would totally be proud to wear it out and about if I had that. I don't have any steampunk but I did make my own fairy costume for the local Renaissance festival. I can't seem to find a good pic of the whole get up but here are my wings. Store bought ones I customized. I also made some galaxy jewelry for my Tardis outfit.
