Cabal Pride 2016!

Over the past 3 years, Nine Swords has hosted massive recruitment events in The Secret World. This year will be no different!! Planning is already underway for another colour filed, fast paced, fun filled event - and I want you to get involved. Looking back over those threads and pictures definitely fires me up enough to want to run an even more phenomenal event this year. I hope you are all going to help make it happen!!

What's your name?

A rose by any other name would smell as sweet... ok, no - not time to delve into English Literature. However, it is time to dig into the reasoning behind another cabal members unique name! Kate cornered Ravynos this month to explain where her name comes from.

Why Madison “Ravynos” Smith?

When naming my character I’ll admit that I wasn’t worried about my whole name as much as I just wanted to start playing the game again. Madison is my daughter's name and Smith is just as generic as it gets. Ravynos, on the other hand, comes from as mix of two things I really like. The name Raven and the Ravnos vampire clan from White Wolf’s Vampire: The Masquerade, a favorite game of mine from my pen and paper role play days.

Big Trouble in the South China Sea - Episode 9.

As she spins, she realises that her last chance decision doomed both her team and herself.

The monitors had shown her it was an Orochi helicopter dropping an attack squad that had caused the Phoenicians to abandon this communications room and concentrate all available bodies on the surface of the island. They were exchanging sporadic small arms fire but the Phoenicians were also charging up a weird looking cannon with some urgency.

She assessed the situation and figured she had two choices. She could try to slip away from the island while both sides were occupied with fighting each other, trying to take her squadmates and Nicholas de Vlamingh in that inflatable, but they wouldn’t get far before the victors would come after them. Or she could try to free the Sirena and allow them to take revenge on their captors - and she was sure a minor detail like being dressed in an Orochi uniform wouldn’t make much difference to the mermaids. Taking out both her enemies with one fell swoop.

She found a Philippines peso on a desk and tossed it. Heads to run. Tails to fight. The coin spun through the air, reflecting the small desk lights and she had a brief moment of light headedness. She trapped it on the back of her left hand, covered it with her right. She sang “I should be so lucky, lucky, lucky, lucky” and revealed the coin - tails up.

Without a second thought she turned and dashed up the dank concrete staircase and into the blinding glare of the morning sun - heading for mesh prison pen of the Sirena. Her mad sprint took her close to the strange cannon just at the moment it discharged. It ‘shouted’ an enormous “Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa Choooooo” and the Orochi helicopter instantly disassembled, hanging for a moment like an exploded diagram of a model, before the pieces dropped out of the sky and into the sea. This is the blast whose backwash put her into the spin and into the path of the concrete, and is about to drop her into the foundations.

She accepts her fate, but out of nowhere, she feels that she is being urgently pushed away from the concrete. She sees that all the Sirena have lined up in an arrow formation and that their mouths are tightly compressed and focused. They have ‘sung’ her out of trouble! The combined force of their voices made it through the mesh and acted like a blast of compressed air.

She ends up on her back, deaf and staring at the sky, when the sun goes out.

The Secret World in the Real World: by Floryn

Hell, by Hans Memling

A lot of things in the Secret World are based on actual stories, events, art, etcetera. The Real Secret World will highlight one of the things you can see in the Secret World and tell you something about it’s origin in the real world. Today’s highlight is a painting that (amongst others) can be found in the Temple Club.

This painting is titled ‘Hell’. It was painted by Hans Memling around 1485.

Man as well as woman, devil as well as dragon, dog and bird, this vicious critter is dancing on the damned as they burn in eternal hell fire. Memling heaps up the horror, so that the inferno broils within the jaws of a colossal fish and the demon holds a banner emphatically denying the possibility of hope: "In hell there is no redemption'. The scene is part of a larger altarpiece intended to frighten 15th-century churchgoers into far better behaviour. But the notion of a torso that can talk was catnip to those modern shock merchants, the surrealists.

Achievement hunting a go!

Remember the Nine Swords Call to Arms? Well you wanted Achievement Hunting - and so.. an idea was born. Nine Swords will be hosting a mega series of mini events within the cabal which will be part of an event chain called "Nights in the Museum". We are currently in the planning phase for this - so if you want to take on scheduling events and helping brainstorm ideas, get in touch with Katelin NOW!!
